Jeddah was founded as a fishing village over 2,500 years ago; in 647 A.D., the Muslim Caliph Osman Bin Affan, turned Jeddah into the main port for the city of Mecca, to facilitate Muslim pilgrims’ arrival to the city during the Hajj season. Jeddah remained a fortified, walled town for centuries under the Ottoman influence, and was not released from Turkish rule until 1915. In 1924, it came under the control of the Sa’ud dynasty, and it currently falls within the new province Makkah, with its provincial capital Mecca. |

| There are two stories as to why the city is named Jeddah; some believe it is named so because Jeddah means seashore, which applies due to its location along the Red Sea cost. Others believe that it is named Jeddah because it contains what is believed to be the Grave of Lady Hawa (eve), the grandmother of humanity, and “jaddah” means grandmother in Arabic. |

| Today, Jeddah contains some of the most beautiful examples of new architecture. However, its current generation is trying to safeguard the ancient city which contains old, coral-colored Ottoman buildings, and so an extensive renovation program, run by the Historical Area Preservation Department, was set up in 1990 for that purpose. |

| Contrary to most Saudi Arabian cities which have a homogeneous population, Jeddah hosts a much more ethnically diverse group of inhabitants; for over centuries, it has received millions of pilgrims of different ethnicities some of whom remained in the city, becoming citizens. In addition, what adds to its diversity is the presence of expatriates coming from non-Muslim countries, who increased in number during the oil-boom of the past 50 years. |

| Now that you’ve arranged the transportation, make sure you visit one of Jeddah’s magnificent attractions, the floodlit Corniche, where over 400 open-air sculptures provide a breathtaking sight to view in the evening. To this day, Jeddah is considered the largest open-air art gallery in the world. These sculptures usually present elements of the Saudi Arabian culture, such as coffee pots and palm trees. After enjoying the sculptures,
you can view what is believed to be the world’s highest fountain (it actually exceeds Geneva’s famous jet d’eau by several meters!) located opposite Al-Salam Palace. As you walk around after sunset, you can see families having picnics, while vendors with handcarts sell refreshing drinks, spicy chickpeas, and candy floss. If you enjoy rides in amusement parks, you can head to the northern sections of the Corniche, where there are large parks for each gender. Other activities you may want to do during your leisure time might include snorkeling or sailing in the magnificent creek, and relaxing in one of the city’s popular private beaches and resorts. If you are traveling with your family, you can picnic and swim privately in the more isolated sections of Jeddah beach in the south. Last but not least, you can go sight-seeing in areas that contain beautiful old houses which enrich the city’s heritage. |
