Doha, the capital of Qatar, hosts the Doha International Airport, the hub of Qatar Airways. The city is named after ‘a big tree’ (Arabic, “Ad Dawha”).
Doha mainly relies on its oil and natural gas industry. However, it boasts a pleasant, laid-back, bay area in the Arabian Peninsula where you may enjoy a leisurely environment. When in Doha, you can go shopping, dining, clubbing, engage in water sports, and visit some architectural sites. You must not leave without visiting Doha’s Education City, where there are many well known international universities like Georgetown University, The Weill Cornell Medical College, Virginia Commonwealth University, Texas A&M University and Carnegie Mellon University, as well as many different private schools. |

You can get from place to place by either using the bus system; there are bus stops scattered throughout the main sections of the city, or, if you’re not much of a bus person, you could always go for a taxi ride. You have two choices: You could either hitch a ride with the newer, air-conditioned cars that have a GPS (prices starting at 5QAR) or opt for the older, not-necessarily-always air-conditioned models (starting at 2QAR). If you’d rather rent a car and travel at your own convenience, it’s very easy to arrange. Just click here.
Doha has such sites as an old fort, many museums, and some mosques (including the famous mosque with a spinning minaret which is located on the “Corniche”). The most famous landmark there is the Government House, built in 1969. Some current projects in Doha include the Cultural Village, as well as an Islamic Art Museum, which should be available to the public sometime soon. |

If you like sports, you will definitely be pleased with the many sports venues in the city, one of which – the Khalifa International Stadium – was home of the 2006 Asian Games. If you’re a fan of water-based activities, then rejoice, for you can enjoy a variety of water sports like fishing, paragliding, water skiing, and jet skiing.
The many malls around Doha that sell international brands provide a definite advantage to people who like shopping: all items are sold free of tax! After a tiring day enjoying the city, you can either stop at an international famous restaurant or a traditional local one. |
